Rather than distributing Christmas gifts, Grafenau-based company AVS Römer is choosing to donate to a worthy cause.
As in previous years, AVS Römer is keen to support projects that provide long-term benefits to the region during the festive season. “Our company’s commitment to social responsibility and to preserving our natural environment is deeply rooted in our values. These are not empty words for us, but an integral part of our corporate culture,” explains Christoph Cegla, Managing Director at AVS Römer.
BUND Naturschutz Project: “Wildcat Forests of Tomorrow”
In the Lower Bavarian municipality of Mauth, located in the district of Freyung-Grafenau, BUND Naturschutz has acquired a 1.8-hectare site with the aim of preserving valuable biotope structures for the endangered wildcat. Two additional reforestation areas of similar size are currently being ecologically enhanced in the municipality of Grafenau.
These important habitats require careful cultivation and protection. Areas that currently hold limited ecological value are being developed in line with conservation principles so they, too, can become sanctuaries for rare plants and animals such as the wildcat. Among other measures, stone piles are being created as hiding places for the wildcat’s prey, while fruit-bearing shrubs and accumulations of deadwood provide retreats for these shy animals and their young.
The development of structurally rich natural forests is being actively supported through AVS Römer’s contribution to the six-year project “Wildcat Forests of Tomorrow”. The initiative aims to create a biodiverse habitat for fungi, plants, insects, amphibians, birds and small mammals – a true home for the elusive wildcat. Antje Laux, Chair of the local BUND Naturschutz chapter, and Tobias Windmaißer, responsible for on-site project implementation, expressed their sincere appreciation for the generous donation.
“The regional commitment of our company has a long tradition. Our focus is on supporting sustainable projects that align with our corporate values,” adds Christoph Cegla. This year’s donation to BUND Naturschutz underscores this dedication in an impressive way.
Grafenauer Tafel
With a donation of €1,000 to the Grafenauer Tafel, AVS Römer is directly supporting an institution that plays a vital role in helping people in need within the district.
“Especially in challenging times, supporting local communities is essential. We are pleased that our donation can help make a difference to those in our neighbourhood,” says Christoph Cegla. Currently, more than 150 registered recipients—representing around 500 individuals—use the Grafenauer Tafel’s services every Wednesday. Around 25 volunteers are actively involved and welcomed the donation, which helps secure the supply of essential groceries such as chilled products, fruit, vegetables, bread and other staples.
There are more than 970 food banks across Germany with a shared mission: to prevent food waste and support people affected by poverty. They rescue food that can no longer be sold and distribute it to individuals who often cannot afford a balanced diet. With the help of 60,000 volunteers, the food banks form one of the largest socio-ecological movements in Germany. Each year they save approximately 265,000 tonnes of food and distribute it to between 1.6 and 2 million people. The food banks are organised under the umbrella of Tafel Deutschland e.V.
